Art of the Week: Cast Off, Revisited

Here's an image of Cast Off in Art for the Earth. Check out the Artica version here.

Edwardsville, IL, 2010

This Week

Sorry this is late this week. I've been busy. I will be away in Augusta until the sale on May 1, so I won't be very active online. I do have a couple of things going on this week though.

Art for the Earth
The Gardens at Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville, IL, 2010
I installed a new inception of my Cast Off piece in this outdoor sculpture show in conjunction with Earth Day and am excited to display this piece again. It is a wholly new experience since it is so responsive to and dependent upon the environment in which it is installed, and I will include a picture of this version in another blog post. Seven outdoor sculptures will be on display in Art for the Earth, some of which will remain throughout the summer.

8th Annual Plein Air Art Event
hosted by the Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce
Augusta, MO
April 21 - May 1, 2010
I am participating in the Augusta plein air event for my third year and will be attending several of the artist events over the rest of the month. Please consider checking out my work at the sale on May 1 at Mount Pleasant Winery.

Art of the Week: Book

I made this book in one of the Missouri Fiber Artists conference workshops at Rock Paper Scissors. I am going to make more of them to use the extra scrapbooking paper from He Said, She Said.

The conference in St. Charles was lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities. I attended three workshops on paper bowls, fabric punch and stitched books and learned some cool techniques.

I was honored to have been selected for the show at the Foundry Arts Centre with my Worn weaving and enjoyed the reception. I also donated my Love Nest piece for the Nest auction, which ended during the reception, and participated in the style fashion show on Sunday with my Blossom piece and several pieces made out of shipping materials and plastic bags for which I was awarded "Most Creatively Eco-Friendly Designer".

This Week

I have a couple of fiber events happening this week in conjunction with the Missouri Fiber Artists conference.

Fiber: TwentyTen
Missouri Fiber Artists
Foundry Arts Centre
520 N. Main Center
St. Charles, MO
April - May 2010
reception: Friday, April 16, 6 - 9 PM

I have also donated my Love Nest piece to the Nest auction - you can check out the auction on the MOFA site here. There have been some amazing pieces donated, so consider bidding on one or several.

I will also be participating in the Fashion Show on Sunday, April 18 in conjunction with the brunch with juror Kay Khan, but I don't know if that event requires that advance tickets be purchased for the brunch.

Art of the Week: Blossom Revisited

I am revisiting my Blossom piece from Art of the Week last week, since the other image was truly just a preview. Here are some photos of the full piece, front and back. I wore this for the Life Blood Exhibit preview party last night.

This Week

This week marks the big start of the group menstruation art exhibit that I've curated with the preview party kickoff. It's a pretty big deal to me and I hope that you can come out and see it. (Check out more information on the show on my blog here.) I also have work in the Second Chance recycled art show at Soulard Art Market and Urbania at Luke & Eloy Gallery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Articles of Dress Review

I am trying to consistently write reviews for the Art Saint Louis blog, although I've only really found the time to do so on a three-month schedule and I'd love to see some other writers. (If you're at all interested in doing so yourself, you should talk to Robin. Hint, hint...) Anyway, my most recent review is on the Articles of Dress show at Craft Alliance on Delmar in University City, so please feel free to check it out here.

Life Blood Exhibit Preview Party

Life Blood Exhibit is coming! This is the big show I've been spending so much time working on. The preview party is a one-night-only event, so please come and check it out before you miss it. Only one week away!

Preview Party Kickoff!
Friday, April 9, 2010, 7 – 10 PM
Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts
3151 Cherokee St.
Life Blood Exhibit is proud to be part of beverlyear at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts. This one-night-only event will include a small sampling of works by several artists in the exhibition, a bathroom installation by Jennifer Weigel and a silent auction including artworks by local artists, a Luna Pads intro kit & two certificates towards The Keeper menstrual cup products.

Life Blood Exhibit is a group art show coordinated by Jennifer Weigel and themed around menstruation that will travel to various venues throughout the St. Louis metro region from 2010 – 2011 and then travel nationally from 2011 – 2012. Each showing will highlight different artists in the group. This traveling art show features thirteen St. Louis women artists exploring the theme of menstruation, from menarche to motherhood to menopause and more. Some works are humorous while others are serious, but all are thought-provoking. Please see the shows, join in the conversation, and help break the taboo! More information can be found on the website. http://www.lifebloodexhibit.com/

Artists:
Lisa Becker, Danielle Correll, Annette Crymes, Marsha Heck, Christine Ilewski, Aunia Kahn, Arlene Ligori, Barbara Merlotti, Janice Nesser, Pat Owoc, Roxanne Phillips, Evie Shucart, Jennifer Weigel

By drawing attention to the female body and to the menstrual cycle, artists are able to comment on this life-giving aspect of womanhood and to celebrate and/or show their discontent with their own bodies & cycles. We are able to offer commentary on experience, confront stereotypes & assumptions and educate one another about things too often left unsaid. Thus we can explore the positive & negative to turn around preconceptions and help break the taboo surrounding menstruation.

Life Blood Exhibit is sponsored in part by The Keeper, Inc., the leader and most trusted & recognized name in the industry, manufacturing menstrual cups since 1987.
